On July 28th, 2011, Constellation Energy Group Inc. (Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.) announced the completion of a 4.4 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at the Denver International Airport (DIA) in Denver, Colorado, United States.
Constellation Energy built, owns and maintains the plant, and sells the electricity it generates to DIA through a 20-year contract. This is the third large PV project at the airport, which now total more than 8 MW.
“With the addition of this solar facility, Denver International Airport’s three solar array systems now produce approximately six percent of the airport’s total power requirements,” said DIA Aviation Manager Kim Day.
“We support alternative energy applications at DIA because these projects are good for the environment while positively impacting our bottom line; they are financially sustainable.
The plant is comprised of approximately 19,000 Yingli PV modules. Oak Leaf Energy Partners (Denver, Colorado, U.S.) originally developed the plant, which was installed by Quanta Services Intermountain Electric (Aurora, Colorado, U.S.).
Constellation Energy owns 95 MW of PV plants that have either been completed or are under construction in the United States. The company states that by structuring its PV projects as power purchase agreements, it requires no up-front capital from its customers and is able to provide power at a fixed cost.
